Collection Overview

Biography / History
Clarence Underwood McElroy was born on 27 November 1847, the son of Abram Briggs and Eliza (Underwood) Skiles in Clarksville, Tennessee. His parents, who resided in Marion County, Kentucky, were temporarily in Tennessee. In 1850, McElroy's parents moved to the William H. Skiles farm near Woodburn, Kentucky, in Warren County. McElroy was reared in the home of his uncle, Henry H. Skiles. He attended Warren County rural schools prior to matriculating at Forest Home Academy in Anchorage, Kentucky. He then entered Centre College Danville, Kentucky, from which he graduated in 1867 with honors. After graduation, McElroy read law at the Clarksville, Tennessee office of Jacob G. Hornberger and House. He began practicing law in Bowling Green in 1870; three years later he entered a partnership with Daniel Webster Wright that lasted for forty-seven years.
McElroy was elected to the Kentucky General Assembly in 1879 and was re-elected for four consecutive terms, serving until 1885. In the House, he served on the Judiciary and Ways and Means Committees. He was the author of the first bill to regulate the operations and rates of state railroads thereby preventing unjust discrimination. This work eventually led to the establishment of the State Railroad Commission. In 1885, he decided to not run for re-election and returned to practicing law in Bowling Green. In 1896, friends persuaded him to run as the Democratic nominee for Congress, but he was defeated. McElroy was an astute jurist. He wrote articles for several law journals, served as president of the Kentucky Bar Association (1902-1903), and worked on the Board of State Bar Examiners (1918-1922).
McElroy was a firm believer and supporter of education. He served as a member of the Kentucky State University Board of Trustees (1886), and as trustee for the University of Kentucky (1893-1895). In addition, he wrote the articles of incorporation for Western Kentucky University's College Heights Foundation to which he liberally contributed and served on its Board of Trustees.
Being a charter member of the XV Club of Bowling Green in 1879, McElroy served as its president for a number of years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and a committed member of the Presbyterian Church. His numerous civic contributions reflect a citizen committed to community improvement.
McElroy married Litie Trigg of Glasgow in 1884; they had no children. For most of their married life, the couple lived at 1302 State Street in Bowling Green. He died on 9 June 1928 and was interred in Bowling Green's Fairview Cemetery.
Scope and Content
The McElroy Collection consists chiefly of Clarence Underwood McElroy's correspondence, both personal and political, and the legal papers of the McElroy and Wright law firm. There are also significant collections of papers related to the Skiles family of Warren County; Abram Briggs McElroy, Clarence's father; the Trigg family of Barren County; the Underwood family of Warren County; and McElroy's law partner, Daniel Webster Wright and his family. The entire collection consists of 22,048 items.
The collection is divided into eight series.
Series I, consisting of 2,853 items, includes the papers of Clarence Underwood McElroy, both personal and political, dating from his school days at Centre College in the mid-1860s to 1927, one year prior to his death. Due to McElroy's prominence in Warren County, the papers cover a wide array of topics relating to southcentral Kentucky, his political campaigns, his work with the Kentucky Bar Association, and to his role as a Democratic representative in Kentucky's General Assembly. Of particular interest in this series are the minute books (1872-1905) and sundry papers of the Warren County Bible Society.
Series II, consisting of 2,113 items, is comprised of correspondence of various Skiles family members, chiefly Henry H. Skiles (1832-1889), Martha Jane (Skiles) Brown Horn-berger Flinn (1834-1894), Joseph Warner Skiles (1838-1896), and the family of Mary M. (Skiles) Murrell. A considerable portion of this series deals with the settlement of Henry H. Skiles' estate.
Series III, consisting of 794 items, contains the correspondence of Abram Briggs McElroy (1816-1883) to various family members.
Series IV, consisting of 965 items, includes personal correspondence of various members of the Trigg family of Barren County. Approximately one-half of this series relatesto the settlement of the Haiden Curd Trigg Estate (1834-1913), a Glasgow banker and entrepreneur.
Series V, consisting of 814 items, includes correspondence, dating from 1849 to 1927, of the Underwood family of Warren County.
Series VI, consisting of 806 items, contains correspondence of Daniel Webster Wright and a significant number of items relating to Bowling Green's Ogden College.
Series VII, consisting of 13,264 items, contains the legal files of the McElroy and Daniel Webster Wright law firm. Boxes 1 through 13 of this series are arranged chronologically and includes information of hundreds of cases handled by the McElroy-Wright firm. Boxes 14 through 19 deal with special cases handled by the firm, including a large amount of material related to the financial affairs of the Whitehead family. Box 20 deals with legal matters relating to various railroads and streetcar lines, including the Bowling Green Portage Railway, Bowling Green Street Railways, the Park City Railway Company, and the Louisville and Nashville (L & N) Railroad. Box 21 deals exclusively with the legal matters of various turnpikes in Warren County. McElroy's financial dealings are covered in Box 22, which includes information on his stocks and bonds holdings.
Series VIII consists of a single box of Warren County Court records (439 items) including the drawing for the proposed 1808 Warren County courthouse.
