Collection Overview

Biography / History
Lawyer, politician. Leslie Combs, born in Kentucky, was educated by the Rev. John Lyle, a well-known Presyterian minister and teacher. He was a captain of scouts in the War of 1812, and saw action in the River Raisin campaign and in the relief of the seige at Fort Meigs, Ohio. After the war, he read law and was admitted to the state bar in 1818. He served several terms in the lower house of the Kentucky legislature between 1827 and 1859, and in 1846 was Speaker. He was clerk of the Court of Appeals from 1860 to 1866. He was a Whig in politics as long as that party existed.
