Collection Overview

Biography / History
Fannie Morton Bryan was born June 6, 1870 to William Bryan (1842-1924) and Sarah G. (Weller) Bryan (1845-1925) of Russellville, Kentucky. William Bryan owned a dry goods store, was a photographer and jointly with J. L. Starks marketed the Starks' Patented Shears. The Bryans had three other children: Ida (1865-1885); Fred W. (1867?-19); and Frank Byrne (1880-1948?).
An 1888 Logan College for Young Ladies graduate, Fannie Bryan served as principal for the Logan Female College's primary and preparatory departments after the turn of the century. A frequent Mammoth Cave visitor and chautauqua participant at Lake Chautauqua, New York, Bryan also traveled to Niagara Falls, Quebec and Montreal. She taught first grade in Russellville until her retirement in 1940. She died on January 2, 1965, and was buried in Russellville's Maple Grove Cemetery.
Scope and Content
Received from Fannie Morton Bryan's estate, the collection includes Bryan's personal correspondence, 1885-1955; Logan Female College trustees minutes, 1860-1869; Russellville Methodist Episcopal Church financial records, 1863-1889; and the business papers for the Starks' Patented Shears, 1887-1890. Of particular interest are Fannie Bryan's diaries, 1889-1895, which detail Russellville social life. Postcards and souvenir pamphlets document Montreal, Quebec, New Orleans, and Lake Chautauqua, New York.
