Biography / History
R. C. Ballard Thruston, a native of Louisville, was a scientist, geologist, historian, and president and benefactor of the Filson Club. He was also an accomplished amateur photographer who recorded family and friends, scenes across Ky. and in many other states, and scenes of his foreign travels.
Scope and Content
R. C. Ballard Thruston photographed historic sites, people at work and play, children, and events which he witnessed. Collection includes photographs taken in Ky. in Anderson, Barren, Boone, Bourbon, Boyle, Breckinridge, Caldwell, Carroll, Daviess, Edmonson, Fayette, Franklin, Green, Hancock, Hardin, Hart, Henry, Hopkins, Jefferson, Larue, Leslie, Lincoln, Madison, Mason, Mercer, Metcalfe, Monroe, Nicholas, Nelson, Oldham, Scott, Shelby, Trimble, and Whitley counties. He photographed scenes and people in Alaska, Ariz., Calif., Colo., Conn., Del., Washington (D.C.), Fla., Ga., Hawaii, Ill., Ind., La., Mass., Mich., Minn., Miss., N.H., N.J., N.M., N.Y., N.C., Ohio, Or., Pa., R.I., S.C., Tenn., Utah, Vt., Va., Wash., W. Va., Wis., and Wyo. Foreign countries in which Thruston traveled and photographed include the Azores, Austria, Bahamas, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Denmark, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Holland, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Panama, the Philippines, and Scotland.
