Collection Overview

Biography / History
Joseph M. Tanner was born in Scott County, Kentucky, on May 17, 1846, to Oliver Tanner (1819-1901) and Elizabeth Dearinger Tanner (b. 1826). He attended Transylvania University, Kentucky University Law School (1872-1873), and Princeton (1873). He practiced law in Lexington, Kentucky, for almost 30 years, before working for the Internal Revenue Service in Frankfort, Kentucky, starting in 1905. Additionally, from 1876-1880 Tanner served as the Treasurer of the city of Lexington. He married Lizzie Butler on October 26, 1876; they had six children together.

The Joseph M. Tanner typescript (dated circa 1925; 0.15 cubic feet; 1 folder) consists of a typescript written by Tanner, a Lexington, Kentucky, attorney and city treasurer, recording his recollections of Lexington between 1875 and 1925. The recollections note houses, businesses, politics, practicing attorneys in the city, and city council members. Many anecdotes about Lexington people and events are included.
