Collection Overview

Biography / History
The majority of the collection centers around three people: Elias Chrisler (1766?-1848), his son Joseph (1802-1840), and Joseph's wife Nancy (Pope) Chrisler (1806-1891). Nancy and Joseph were married in 1826 and moved from Bullitt County to Hancock County soon afterward.
Scope and Content
This collection contains the papers of the Chrisler and Pope families of Hancock and Bullitt Counties, Kentucky. The bulk of the correspondence chronicles family activities and farm business and is between Nancy Chrisler and other family members, most of whom lived in Bullitt and Jefferson Counties. Most of the correspondence takes place between 1848 and 1859. The collection contains some business papers, including a purchase agreement for a slave named Isaac and a detailed promissory note for the hire of a slave girl named Mary, both signed by Joseph Christler. Christler hired Mary from her owner, William L. Lewis. There are also numerous ledger sheets, receipts, and invoices for groceries, dry goods, and other expenses.
