Collection Overview

Biography / History
Family traces line back to David Crews who came into Ky. with the Daniel Boone party in 1775 that erected Fort Boone. In the nineteenth century family member Charles P. Ball of Danville, Ky., invented and held patents on many items, such as the "Boss Roofing Nail," and an improved vaporizer.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of two parts: historical and genealogical. The historical material is dated from 1838-1924. The genealogical material is dated 1888-1994. Autobiographical Sketch of the Public Career of Admiral James Hosken. Also a Brief Notice of his Father, (Penzance: F. Rodda, 1889) has been transfered from the collection to Rare Books, and one file of family photographs has been transferred to the photo archives. Historical records include letters from China Crews Collins to her children describing life in Kentucky from the Antebellum era to Reconstruction; letters concerning westward expansion to Washington state and Missouri; and Civil War letters from Rock Island Prison. Genealogical records include DAR research, coat-of-arms, family bible records, and family trees.
