Biography / History
Governor Gabriel Slaughter served in office from 1816-1820 as a Democratic Republican. Originally from Virginia, Slaughter resided in Mercer County, KY. His occupations included farmer and soldier, and saw action at the Battle of New Orleans. Gabriel Slaughter became Governor upon Madison's death, serving during the "Panic of 1819" which caused economic disruption.
