Collection Overview

Biography / History
John E. Thierman, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, was a resident of Nicholasville and Lexington during the period in which these photographs were taken. He was employed in Lexington by the Veteran's Administration as a rehabilitation therapist while simultaneously engaged in the sale of photographs to such publications as the LOUISVILLE COURIER JOURNAL and SOUTHERN LIVING. Thierman was also a member of the Lexington Camera Club.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of an estimated 2,200 photogaphic prints and negatives taken by free-lance photographer John E. Thierman, of Lexington. Included are black and white prints, and black and white and color negatives. Photographic subjects include agriculture, particularly tobacco and horse industries; boats and ships; bridges; covered bridges; capitol buildings of various southern states; churches; colleges and universities; construction of houses, buildings, dams, etc.; courthouses and other public buildings; historic sites; historic markers; mills; museums; general panorama; state and national parks; rivers, lakes, and streams; railroads; roads and highways; Lexington and Louisville street scenes; and weapons. The bulk of the photographs were taken in Kentucky, particularly the central and eastern sections of the state. Photographs or negative sleaves are consistently dated and labelled.
