Collection Overview

Biography / History
Thomas Henry Hines (1838-1898), a native of Butler County, Kentucky, served the Confederates in the Civil War as a spy from 1861 - 1865. After the war, Hines stayed in Toronto, Canada where he studied law under General John C. Breckinridge. In 1867, he and his family settled in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He practiced law until 1878 when he was elected to the Kentucky Supreme Court of Appeals, eventually serving as Chief Justice from 1884 to 1886. After his term as Chief Justice, Hines moved to Frankfurt, Kentucky where he continued to practice law until his death in 1898.
