Collection Overview

Biography / History
Samuel Brown was born in January 1769 in Augusta County, Virginia. His father Reverend John Brown taught at a grammar school where Samuel began his educational journey. Samuel received his Bachelor of Arts from Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Aberdeen. He eventually became a professor at Transylvania University from 1819 to 1825. Brown spent time abroad before returning to the States in 1828, when he moved to Madison County, Alabama. He lived their until his death on January 12, 1830.
Scope and Content
The Samuel Brown diary (dated 1824; 0.01 cubic feet; 1 folder) primarily comprises photocopies of journal entries that document Dr. Samuel Brown's stay in Paris during the summer of 1824. Brown, a professor at Transylvania University at the time, spent his time in Paris with several colleagues in the medical field from around the world. Also, Samuel Brown describes his daily life in the scope of 19th century Parisian culture, specifically detailing his experiences at churches.
