Collection Overview

Biography / History
Jack Edgar Weller, a New York-born Presbyterian minister, moved to West Virginia and spent 13 years working in Appalachia before writing the book, Yesterday's People, which was published by University of Kentucky Press in 1965.
Scope and Content
The Yesterday's People: life in contemporary Appalachia manuscript includes the original manuscript, revisions, galleys, and proofs of Jack Edgar Weller's book and materials written before publication. Also, it contains correspondence and several reviews from national journals and local newspapers. Yesterday's People describes the culture and customs of the Southern Appalachian people, and presents an analysis of their problems. These documents show the various stages, from manuscript copy to final proofs, in the production of this book. Also included are letters written by publishers and individuals in response to Weller's attempts to publish his work.
