Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Metropolitan Women's Political Caucus (MLWPC) began in 1972 as a non-partisan response to the growing concern for the lack of women in local, state, and national government posts. Initially, its primary concern was the placement of a larger number of women in policy-making positions. As its organization has grown, its concerns have expanded. While the general foundation of its beliefs remains fixed on placing women in better governmental positions, the members are also pursuing, as stated in the membership brochure, "equality for all people." Today, the goals of the MLWPC are numerous: placing women in better political offices, publicizing women's issues, pushing programs and measures guaranteeing equal protection under the law, enforcing legislation prohibiting discrimination of any kind, and exerting political influence.
The MLWPC acts as more than just a political organization. Its multi-partisan membership encourages awareness of numerous issues outside the immediate political arena. Working with other political organizations on the local, state, and national levels, the MLWPC brings to the public, knowledge of issues that effect not only women, but the community as a whole.
Scope and Content
The papers of the Metropolitan Louisville Women's Political Caucus (MLWPC) date 1975-81 and 1987-95. These papers detail the depth of political concern of this organization, showing how its members reach beyond local female candidacy issues, into local, state, and national human rights issues. The MLWPC papers show political concern for equality problems, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and other such matters.
The scope of these papers, seen through the eight series, exemplifies the concerns of the MLWPC. Most of the collection pertains to the internal workings of the organization, such as minutes, financial information, and general membership data. Also shown in the collection is the interaction of the MLWPC with its community, exemplified by its workshops, fundraisers, and campaign contributions.
A final aspect of this collection is information pertaining to organizations on the local, state, and national levels not directly affiliated with the MLWPC and miscellaneous printed materials. Included are articles on domestic violence, national opinion polls, and information regarding women elected officials.
