Collection Overview

Biography / History
John Jouett, a close friend of Thomas Jefferson, was the man who warned Jefferson, then governor of Virginia, that he risked capture by Lord Cornwallis' troops as they advanced on Charlottesville in 1781. After the war, Jouett moved to Kentucky, where he was twice elected a delegate to the Virginia General Assembly. His son, Matthew Harris Jouett, became a famous portrait painter in the early nineteenth century.
Scope and Content
This is a collection of papers relating to two lawsuits brought by members of the Jouett family in the late eighteenth century. The two cases were JOUETT VS. HOLDER and JOUETT VS. BUCKS. Materials from the first case (52W63) date from 1785-1832. Included are legal documents, such as depositions and summonses, land grants, surveys and manuscript maps of lands in Clark County which were disputed between John Jouett and his family and the heirs of John Holder. Papers from the second case (52W64) date from 1804-1820. That case centered around a mill and a distillery in Woodford County. John Jouett and his heirs pressed their case against Charles and Peter Bucks and their heirs.
