Collection Overview

Biography / History
William Frese was born near Hanover, Germany, and emigrated to America in 1873. He settled first in St. Louis, remaining there for two years. He then moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1876, where he lived until 1886, when he married Mary Wagner and moved to Boston. Frese returned to Louisville and established his own music school, the W.M. Frese Piano School, with his brother Gustav in 1888. The Frese brothers partnered with violinist Henry Burck in 1889 and the name of the school changed to the Frese-Burck Music School. Frese was a graduate of the Leipsic Conservatory of Music in Germany. He played the organ for Warren Memorial Presbyterian Church in Louisville for many years. Frese died at sea on July 2, 1894 on the passage to Europe.
