Collection Overview

Biography / History
Howard Malcom Jones and Lillian Frances Young married on August 4, 1941 in Barren County. After their marriage, Mrs. Jones dropped the name Lillian and she did not use it in any of her correspondence or documents. Frances was born on November 2, 1915 and grew up on a farm near Cave City. She was the daughter of Ampsa P. and Claudia Amelia (White) Young. Mrs. Jones was active in a number of historical societies and heritage groups, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Filson Club, the Kentucky Historical Society, and was a charter member of the Southern Kentucky Genealogical Society.
Howard Malcolm Jones was born on December 15, 1914 in Glasgow, the son of Vincent Reynolds and Jennie Jean (Smith) Jones. He matriculated at Western Kentucky University, eventually transferring to the Bowling Green Business University. He graduated in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science in Higher Accounting in May 1938. Jones was a practicing Certified Public Accountant in Glasgow for over fifty years. He founded the CPA firm known as Campbell, Myers and Rutledge and served as Barren County Treasurer for seventeen years. He served a term as president of the Kentucky Society of CPAs and as president of the Glasgow/Barren County Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Rotary Club. In addition to his civic work, Jones was an avid sportsman.
The Jones's had two daughters, Jean Luckett and Frances Malcolm (Mikki), and were members of the Glasgow Baptist Church. Frances died on March 24, 1995 and Howard died on March 26, 1996. The couple was interred at the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of 14 boxes of material amassed chiefly by Frances Young Jones. The collection contains the papers of several Barren County families, the most prominent including the Eubanks, Huggins, Jones, Smith, Warder, White, and Young families. The largest family collection (Boxes 3-6) relates to the William Basil and Annie Laurie Smith family. A major portion of this family collection is correspondence between Mrs. Smith and her children: Edward H., Howard B., Malcolm R., and Sarah L.
The Young family papers (Box 7) document this Barren County family from the 1830s to the 1970s. Of particular interest is a short diary kept by George ChapmanYoung about his trip to California in 1850-1851 during the gold rush. Letters from young to his father Asa document later periods of residence in California and Idaho. George Chapman Young's Civil War letters are also included with these papers. Several account books found in Box 9 are related to a Barren County saw and grist mill owned and operated by Asa Young.
The John B. White correspondence (Box 7) documents White's medical practice in Barren County, and a controversy in which White was accused of quackery. This correspondence includes a number of recommendation letters from local physicians praising White's ability and character.
Many of the family collections are supplemented by genealogical papers and correspondence in Boxes 10-12. Most of this genealogical material was generated by Annie Laurie Smith, Jeannie Jean Smith, and Frances Young Jones.
The collection contains a great deal of information about the history of Barren County. Box 8 contains some Barren County court records, information on historic structures in Barren County, historic events, Wigwam Village, and Revolutionary War veterans that eventually settled in Barren County.
Papers collected by Howard Malcom Jones and his wife Frances Young Jones of Glasgow, Kentucky. The collection contains the papers of several families from Barren County, Kentucky, including the Eubanks, Huggins, Jones, Smith, Warder, White and Young families. Collection also contains information about Barren County history and some Barren County Court records.
