Biography / History
Lawyer, state legislator. Robert Wickliffe was born in Pennsylvania while his parents were en route from Nelson County, Virginia to settle in Kentucky. He read the law with George Nicholas who later became Attorney General of Kentucky. Wickliffe was elected to the state legislature from Fayette County in 1819, 1823 and 1825, and was state senator from 1825 to 1833. Wickliffe distinguished himself as one of the leaders of the "Old Court Party" and as a skillful real estate lawyer. He married Margaret Howard and, after her death, Mary Russell, the only child of Col. John Todd who was killed at the Battle of Blue Licks. Wickliffe's daughter, Margaret, married General William Preston in 1840.

A noted Lexington, Kentucky attorney and state legislator, Wickliffe's correspondence, copied by several clerks, reflects legal and business transactions with clients in Kentucky, New York, Virginia, Ohio and other states. Most of the letters, receipts, notes and drafts relate to business and real estate matters. There is also a copy of Kentucky Congressman Benjamin Howard's will.
