Collection Overview

Biography / History
Congressman Rogers C. B. Morton was born on September 19, 1914, in Kentucky. He served eight years in the United States House of Representatives (1963-1971) and as Chairman of the Republican National Committee (1969-1971) after aiding in the election of Richard M. Nixon (1968). Nixon appointed Morton Secretary of the Interior in 1971. Morton continued in his role following the resignation of Nixon under President Gerald Ford (1971-1975), until he was appointed to Secretary of Commerce in 1975. Morton left the Cabinet to direct the President Ford Election Committee in 1976, and served in that position until after the Republican National Convention. Morton retired from public life in 1977; he died at his home on April 19, 1979.
Longtime Republican activist Angela Raisch served as Rogers C.B. Morton's secretary during his White House career.
