Biography / History
John W. Jones farmed near North Middletown, Kentucky. He served as an elder of the North Middletown Christian Church and was the founder and treasurer of the North Middle Town and Cane Ridge Turnpike Company. Additionally he acted as a loan officer for his friends and neighbors.
Scope and Content
The John W. Jones papers primarily consist of diaries written by John W. Jones and his family from Bourbon County, Kentucky. The diaries have information about the building of the North Middletown and Cane Ridge turnpike and toll collections on it, local church life, family events, slaves, and local news and weather. Additionally, the papers include a small amount of financial papers, letters, and genealogical notes as well as a copy of Henck's Field Book for Railroad Engineers.

Contents of the Collection

Diaries, 1857-1882

The Diaries series consists of Jones family diaries, most belonging to John W. Jones, and contain information about the building of the North Middletown and Cane Ridge turnpike and toll collections on it, local church life, family events, slaves, and local news and weather. They also include stock breeding records, data on the employment of farm hands, and loan records. Frequent fishing expeditions to nearby mountains are described in detail and weekly trips to court days in surrounding communities resulted in a continuing record of prices of commodities.
