Biography / History
Robert W. P. Johnston (1920-2003), the son of Philip Preston Johnston, Jr. and Margaret Wickliffe Preston Johnston, served as a soldier in the American Field Service and later an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. He took part in the African campaigns of WWII, including military engagements in North Africa, Syria, and Egypt. Following his service, Johnston spent the rest of his life on his farm outside Lexington, Ky. Johnston married Laura Stone Walton, the daughter of Laura De Lavillon Kinkead Walton and Samuel Barton Walton; they had no children.
Scope and Content
The Johnston family papers (dated 1921-1983, undated; 0.68 cubic feet; 2 boxes) consist of family diaries and memoirs of the Robert W. P. Johnston family. The most notable items of the collection are three diaries of Robert W. P. Johnston which are descriptive chronicles of war time conditions in the African Campaign of World War II. Johnston, a soldier in the American Field Service and later an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II, provides impressions and comments regarding his time spent sailing on the ship, Westpoint, as it sailed to the middle east, routines of an Army officer in the Ambulance Corps, descriptions of various places visited, and a number of accounts of military engagements in North Africa, Syria and Egypt. All three diaries have been transcribed.
Also included is a bound typescript of the memoirs of George Blackburn Kinkead, the typescript of a carbon of the memoirs of Laura de LaVillon Kinkead Walton (daughter of George Kinkead) and a copy of the typescript of Laura Stone Walton Johnston (daughter of Laura Kinkead Walton and wife of Robert W. P. Johnston), Wanderings of an Idle Mind (Which includes some photographs). Transcriptions of two diaries written by R. W. P. Johnston's paternal uncle, Dr. Marius E. Johnston, An Arctic Journey and Through Africa on a Mule in 1910, are also present.
