Collection Overview

Biography / History
The heresy trial of 1917 at Transylvania University and the College of the Bible in Lexington, Kentucky came as a result of a petition circulated by several students of the latter which protested that the teachings of professors William C. Bower, A. W. Fortune, and others, were outside the traditions of the college and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This event was nationally publicized by the conservative Christian Church periodical THE CHRISTIAN STANDARD, and various church leaders put pressure on the College of the Bible Board of Trustees to investigate the matter. The result of the investigation was the complete exoneration of the faculty members involved. Financial support of both institutions by Christian Church members was for a time significantly reduced as a result of this "trial".
