"Locomotive Utilization Study" - July 30, 1962 - Internal report, 21 pp. plus charts, exhibits, by I. W. King, methods & proceds., transp. Dept., and W. I. Johnson, a/chief Mech. officer. Report reviewed week of operations of L & N's 522 diesel loco. fleet with goal of obtaining greater use of fleet by monitoring day-to-day operations, setting up loco. utilization bureau for system to direct operations. Similar operations of other RR's studied and observed.
"IBM Running Time Comparison," Present Motive Power of L & N VS. GE U25B locos." - Study made by General Electric Co., Erie, Pa., for L & N; 19 pp., G. T. Bevan, GE, author. Report evaluates operation of several L & N freight train schedules using existing diesel locos., then comparing w/computer "profile" improvements in schedules, tonnages moved if L & N used then-new higher horsepower, more modern GE diesels.
"Future Locomotive Requirements" - Report made by General Motors Corp. (Electro-Motive Division) for L & N in April, 1967. 16 pp., w/charts of var. recommended loco. models then produced by EMD's La Grange, Ill., plant. L & N's traffic (freight) considered, with recommendations on upgrading existing loco. fleet w/new EMD loco. models. Report similar to above GE report, with obvious aim of selling more new diesels:
"Technical Proposal- Communications System for L & N RR" - Proposal, 44pp., made to L & N by Simplex Wire & Cable Co., Cambridge, Mass., & Stromberg-Carlson/Gen'l Dynamics, Rochester, NY., in Dec., 1963. Proposal, very technical (w/charts, detailed data), covers new cable communications system from Lou. to Nash., including on-line stations, branches; types of telephones, speakers, repeater-relay equipment which might be used.
"Records program for VP-Operating Dept., Chief Transp. Officer" - Internal proposal made by Methods Analysis & Cost Reduction Dept., Lou., Ky. (L & N), Aug. 1968, for top officers, staff of operating dept., on records-keeping, filing, other office procedures with goal to improve records management.
"System Car Count", L & N RR, Jan. 26- Feb. 1, 1964" - Internal report made for Chief Transp. Officer of L & N by study team, includ. I. W. King, mgr., car utilizat., other reps. from car util. bureau, traffic dept. Report provides daily car count of freight cars (averages moving on principal L & N routes (loads, empties) and between major on-line cities, their terminals, yards. 34 pp., w/charts
"Transportation Data Manual for 1050 System/L & N RR" - Internal manual written & issued by transportation Dept. of L & N in Dec., 1964 (updated May, 1967) to introduce then-new IBM 1050-360 computer system and network, which RR then installed to transmit and store relavant data, messages, other operational reports. System covered 40 offices across L & N system, connected them to computer center in Gen. Ofc. Bldg., Louisville. This manual explained use of system, types of machines, terminals, tapes, cards used; it outlined procedures to be followed for data entry and retrieval; appendix included instructions, sample messages, codes, abbreviations to be used, etc.
