Biography / History
Lawyer, politician. Eldon Steven Dummit was born in Missouri. After receiving a law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1921 Dummit became a prominent member of the Republican Party in Kentucky during the 1940s and 1950s, serving as state attorney general in the administration of Governor Simeon Willis (1943-1947). He made an unsuccessful bid for governor in 1947. Dummit was active in many civic and leadership organizations, including the Optimist Club International, of which he was president in 1941/42; the Pyramid Club, the Boy Scouts of America and the American Legion.
Scope and Content
These are the papers of Eldon S. Dummit. They relate to his work as Kentucky Attorney General and his gubernatorial bid. Included in the papers are campaign literature, speeches, political cartoons, election documents, news clippings, photographs, memorabilia and correspondence. Among the correspondents are John Sherman Cooper, Thruston B. Morton and Kentucky governors Flem Sampson and Simeon Willis. Much of the correspondence is from Kentucky politicians, attorneys, congressmen and judges. There is also material related to the Republican National Committee.
