Biography / History
The Lexington and Newtown Turnpike Company constructed a turnpike from Lexington to Newtown in Scott County, Kentucky.
Scope and Content
The Lexington and Newtown Turnpike Company records comprise a stock book, treasurer's book, and a ledger, documenting the company's investors, budgets and expenses, and the board of managers' meetings. The stock book consists of an inventory of the company’s stockholders and a record of the certificates they owned. The treasurer's book contains financial transactions for the turnpike company. The book also includes a printed copy of the 1848 Act for the benefit of the Maysville and Mount Sterling Turnpike Road laid in June 1870 and a handwritten contract. The ledger book records minutes from the meetings of the turnpike company board of managers as well as itemized budgets and expenditures for specific projects.
