A leading Ky. family. Most of the papers are the correspondence of Judge Thomas Alexander Marshall (1794-1871), U.S. congressman, lawyer, and chief justice of the Kentucky Court of Appeals, son of Senator Humphrey Marshall and nephew of Chief Justice John Marshall. The letters include references to national political affairs and personalities from 1832 to 1835. The family correspondence, 1823-1879, discusses Calif. in the 1850's; Nicaragua under the regime of William Walker, 1856-1857; John H. Marshall; the Civil War; and Taos, New Mexico. Correspondents include Thomas E. Bramlette, Henry Clay, James Paxton Harbeson, John Marshall, and Theodore Dwight Woolsey.
