Collection Overview

Scope and Content
The collection is comprised of invoices of merchandise purchased mostly by Allen and by F.C. Petry. The invoices are of special interest for the billheads, which identify numerous commercial establishments in the second half of the nineteenth century in Louisville and Maysville, Kentucky. Among the Louisville firms named are Thomas McGrain, tin and copper warehouser; Morton and Griswold, booksellers and publishers; A.B. Semple and Company, hardware dealer; Miller and Gardner, dry goods; Robert J. Ormsky, hardware and cutlery dealer; Bamberger and Joseph, boot and shoe sales; Wilson and Heady, grocers and produce dealers; R. Knott, dry goods; Duvall, Ketchum and Co., carpets, wallpaper and curtains; James McCullough, furniture; John Duffy and Co.; Adams Express Company, express forwarders; J.W. Seaton and Co., druggist; Otis W. Snyder, practical jeweler and optician; J. Quest boots and shoes; Mrs. J. Muirhead, milliner; John Bartman and Sons, Lumber and millwork; and George Kaiser, blacksmith and wagon manufacturers. Maysville firms mentioned include J.J. Wood and Brother, wholesale druggist, and Thomas A. Davis, book and job printer. All Maysville invoices were directed to Petry. Also present are invoices from firms in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
