Biography / History
Victor Karl Hammer was born in Vienna in 1882. Known as a painter and typographer, he emmigrated to the United States and taught fine arts at Wells College in New York. While at Wells he established a college press. In 1948 he was named artist-in-residence at Transylvania University, in Lexington, Kentucky. He was active as a hand-press printer and was the designer of the widely used typeface, American Uncial. He died in Lexington in 1967.
