<bioghist>

Nannie Gastineau Faulconer (1865?-1940) was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky. She graduated from Hamilton College and taught in the Lexington city schools. After the death of her husband, Clarence L. Faulconer, she was elected Superintendent of Schools for Fayette County in November, 1905. Faulconer was re-elected three times, serving 16 consecutive years in this capacity until her resignation in 1921. For the next six years, she worked as librarian of Morehead State Teachers' College. Throughout her life, Faulconer remained active in church, school, and civic affairs. She was a member of the Democratic Woman's Club, Woodland Christian Church, and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

During her tenure as school superintendent, Faulconer instituted several innovations to improve the rural school system. In place of the traditional one-room school house, Fayette County adopted the earliest system of consolidated schools in the state. In 1910, Greendale School was established as the state's first consolidated school and by the end of Faulconer's administration, Fayette County contained a total of eight consolidated schools. As part of this program, Faulconer inaugurated a system of free transportation to these schools.

During Faulconer's term as superintendent, fifteen white and eight black schools were built. Among the accredited four-year high schools established during her supervision were: Picadome, Greendale, Athens, Faulconer, and Russell Cave. Nannie Faulconer also broadened the curriculum of Fayette County schools by adding home economics, industrial arts courses, athletics, and agricultural instruction. In her pursuit to improve the school system, Faulconer attempted to hire only qualified teachers with proper credentials and in 1911, she lengthened the school year from six to nine months.

The
Barker and Faulconer Fayette County Public Education photographs, 1869-1941
consists of photographic prints that document early 20th century public education in Fayette County for both black and white students during the tenure of Mrs. Nannie G. Faulconer, superintendent from 1905-1921. The collection also contains lantern slides, prepared for a presentation by Besse B. Barker, that illustrate white education in Fayette County from 1869-1941.
