Colonel John Allen, a soldier during the War of 1812, married Jane Logan Allen, the daughter of Kentucky pioneer Benjamin Logan. Their daughter, Eliza, married Pierce Butler, a member of the Kentucky legislature.
The Allen-Butler family papers consist entirely of correspondence between members of the Butler and Allen families. Included are letters written by Colonel John Allen to his wife, Jane Logan Allen, and by Robert and Benjamin Logan to their sister, Mrs. Jane Logan Allen, providing details on the War of 1812. Additionally, the collection includes letters written by Pierce Butler to his wife while he was a member of the Kentucky legislature and describe items of interest before the state legislature, such as bills on internal improvements, banks, importation of slaves and conduct of servants; a trip on the Ohio River; and a duel between William Duke and Roger Hanson. Also present are two letters from James Harlan to Thomas B. Stevenson.
